This curriculum provides a comprehensive, action-oriented framework designed to increase public awareness of marine pollution and prepare citizens to contribute safely and responsibly to marine environmental protection.

Recognising that marine pollution poses significant risks to marine ecosystems, biodiversity, coastal livelihoods, and human health, the programme equips participants with the knowledge, practical awareness, and decision-making skills needed to prevent pollution, recognise pollution incidents, support environmental monitoring, and participate in community-based marine protection activities. Particular emphasis is placed on heavy metal pollution, while also addressing broader marine pollution challenges, wildlife protection, clean-up practices, citizen science, and community engagement.

Through a series of theoretical and practical modules, participants develop an understanding of the sources, pathways, impacts, monitoring, prevention, and management of marine pollution. The programme introduces the general public to the behaviour of pollutants in marine environments, including their persistence, transport, bioaccumulation, and biomagnification, while explaining their impacts on marine organisms, ecosystems, seafood safety, and public health. It also highlights the importance of protecting sensitive coastal habitats and biodiversity and demonstrates how coordinated community action can support long-term marine conservation.

A key principle of the curriculum is that public participation should be both meaningful and safe. The programme clearly distinguishes between the roles of volunteers and those of trained professionals, ensuring that participants understand how they can contribute through observation, documentation, reporting, awareness-raising, citizen science, and low-risk clean-up activities, while recognising situations that require professional intervention. Strong emphasis is placed on field safety, responsible communication, environmental stewardship, and collaboration with competent authorities and environmental organisations.

The curriculum combines structured learning with practical demonstrations, scenario-based exercises, field activities, mapping exercises, reporting simulations, group discussions, community action planning, and citizen science activities. Participants are encouraged to explore local marine pollution issues, identify potential pollution sources, understand appropriate response measures, and contribute to community initiatives that strengthen marine pollution preparedness, prevention, and environmental protection.
