Short Training Program - Responding to Eutrophication and Algal Bloom Incidents

This curriculum provides a comprehensive, science-based training framework designed to introduce professionals and practitioners to the key concepts, tools, and approaches needed to monitor, manage, and respond to eutrophication events and harmful algal blooms (HABs). Recognizing that eutrophication and HABs represent complex, transboundary challenges with far-reaching ecological, economic, and public health consequences, this programme aims to build awareness and foundational competencies that support more informed, coordinated, and evidence-based action to protect marine ecosystems and coastal communities.

Through eight integrated modules, participants are introduced to the science of eutrophication, early warning and monitoring systems, impact mitigation, response strategies, long-term prevention, and the application of innovative digital tools. The curriculum combines classroom instruction with hands-on field exercises, simulation drills, and role-playing scenarios to help participants connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications and contribute constructively to multi-stakeholder response efforts.

By the end of the programme, participants will have developed an understanding of:
